Julius's mark-making usually relies on hand-cut tiles, each piece impossible to replicate. Casting lets him do the opposite, reproducing the same pattern exactly, again and again. Most of the works here begin as a cast of a mosaic, which he then cuts apart and reassembles into a kind of cast collage, repeating a motif or reworking it. In some, he cuts sections out and sets real mosaic and glass back in. Painterly gestures run through all of it.
He's working with the same tiles, grout and tools as the construction crew in the barracks outside his studio, aiming his effort at art instead of construction. While everyone else has been away for the summer, that crew has been his feedback loop. They don't share his language, and they don't really understand what he's making, so the feedback is mostly thumbs up, or thumbs down.
