Julius Karoubi's Smoke from the welder, 2026, is a mixed media work combining polymer plaster, acrylic paint, grout, and stained pine. The piece is structured as a series of stacked horizontal bands of varying widths, each carrying layered, map-like linear patterns separated by light intervals that run across the full height of the composition. Blues, reds, greens, browns, and oranges alternate across the surface, with cool and warm tones distributed through the bands without obvious hierarchy. The surface is matte and dimensional, built up in shallow relief through what appears to be incised or cut linear work that opens voided white lines into the underlying material, creating a play of shadow within the construction. The stained pine border is visible at the edges, grounding the layered plaster and paint within a frankly material frame.
