Julius Karoubi's Moldy cheese is a mixed media work combining polymer plaster, acrylic paint, grout, and stained pine. The piece is structured as a four by five grid of twenty rectangular panels arranged in uniform rows and columns, each panel carrying its own constellation of gestural marks while contributing to the larger whole. Across the surface, dominant yellows and greens move against greys, blacks, and whites, with warm and cool tones distributed unevenly so that the eye settles differently depending on where attention lands. The material presence is considerable: brushstrokes, handprints, splattered and dripped paint, linear scratches, and sweeping organic marks build a shallow but physically varied surface, with the polymer plaster and grout contributing to a matte, textured finish that differs from conventional canvas painting. The grid format imposes structure on what is otherwise markedly loose and process-driven handling, and that tension between system and gesture is the central visual fact of the work.
