Speed racers
Gesso, graphite pastel and acrylic on canvas
142.5 × 162.5 cm
Charlie Roberts's Speed Racers, executed in gesso, graphite pastel, and acrylic on canvas, is a large-format work that divides its vertical field into two distinct yet visually rhyming zones of cycling drama. In the upper register, a rider on a yellow road bike leans hard into an aggressive forward position, clad in green jersey and helmet, while behind them a deer or gazelle leaps through a pale, mist-softened mountainous distance rendered in atmospheric washes that dissolve the peaks into something close to memory. Below, a second cyclist in matching green kit pedals a smaller vehicle, from whose back a pair of decorative wings unfurl, introducing a quietly fantastical note that tilts the sporting subject toward allegory or myth. Roberts works across both figures with careful blending and anatomical attentiveness, anchoring the surreal elements in a muted earth palette of greens, yellows, browns, and grays that holds the composition together even as its logic slips between the literal and the symbolic. The work asks the viewer to hold both registers simultaneously, reading competition and endurance alongside something more interior, as though physical effort and transcendence are simply two faces of the same motion.
