Charlie Roberts's Arctic surf, made with gesso, graphite pastel, and acrylic on canvas, is a large-format work that commands attention through its cool, expansive coastal atmosphere. A solitary figure in a black wetsuit stands in the shallows of the foreground, gripping a vivid green and white surfboard that cuts sharply against the surrounding palette of blues, teals, and layered grays. Behind the figure, steep cliff formations rise in receding planes beneath a pale, washed-out sky, while in the middle distance a second surfer carves through a turquoise wave, anchoring the eye within the composition's deep spatial recession. The water itself moves through tonal gradations from white foam at the shore to dense teal further out, and Roberts uses gesso and graphite pastel alongside acrylic to build a surface quality that hovers between photographic stillness and material texture. The work asks the viewer to hold both the solitude of the figure and the indifferent scale of the landscape simultaneously, finding in that tension something quietly unresolved.
