Sverre Bjertnæs
Oljefondet
Oil on canvas, framed with glass
210 × 130 cm
Sverre Bjertnæs, Oljefondet, oil on canvas, is a large-scale, commanding work whose title translates to "the oil fund," a reference to Norway's sovereign wealth fund built on petroleum reserves. The painting is vertically oriented and densely layered, with a central white vertical form anchoring a surrounding field of fragmented geometric and organic shapes rendered in greens, earth tones, ochres, burnt oranges, warm yellows, reds, and blues. Halftone dot patterns and translucent applications of paint accumulate across the surface, creating a sense of depth and visual compression, while lime green accents introduce a charged, restless energy throughout the composition. Curved, body-like forms push against angular planes, and the overall effect oscillates between structural control and expressive fragmentation. The work holds the viewer at the intersection of order and chaos, asking them to sit with the tension rather than resolve it.
